A FEW nights later, Wilson woke to the sound of his phone ringing. Reaching across Steve to the table, he smiled at his sleeping lover. The man could sleep through just about anything, unless it had to do with the animals. If there was something wrong, the slightest cry seemed to have him awake almost instantly. “Hello,” Wilson answered, looking at the clock.

“It’s Howard. I’ve been trying to get in touch with you for two days. The record company loved your song, and they’re wondering when you’ll have the rest.”

“Howard, it’s four in the morning. People work here, and you could have woken the entire house.” Well, he’d already woken half of it, and Steve worked hard enough that he needed his sleep.

“Like I said, I’ve been trying to get you for days, so I decided to try before the ass crack of dawn.” Howard took a second to breathe, and Wilson left the bedroom, walking across the hall to the bathroom so he wouldn’t disturb Steve. “The studio has also sent over the final contract for your debut film appearance. Your character isn’t the lead, but we knew that. The script looks really good. The part is interesting, and I think you can do a great job with it. You might even steal the picture if you play it right.” Howard sounded so pleased. “So how is everything in Wyoming?”

“Fine. I bought some horses, and I’m learning how to ride. This weekend we’re going to a good old-fashioned ranch barbecue. Why don’t you come out for a few days in a few weeks, and we can go over some business and review that script,” Wilson offered. Anything to get Howard off the phone so he could go back to bed.

“I’d also like to hear the songs you’re working on,” Howard said.

“I sent you the one that’s done. That’ll have to be enough for now.” The truth was, that song was the only thing he’d written or felt like writing, but he wasn’t going to tell Howard that. “Good night, and I’ll see you in a few weeks.” Wilson hung up before Howard could protest.
